Kim Simon's Birthday Party

Kim Simon is the director of Gallery TPW and her family, through the Simon Family Fund helped out with Eat the Street, so we thought we would return the favour by celebrating her birthday. Luckily the party was happening just around the corner from Mother India so we headed over there after dinner and ran around, ate some cake and tried (unsuccessfully) to convince adults to give us some alcohol.

Mother India Reviews

"I ordered the chicken roti and a plain lassi. I waited and waited and then the waiter said that somebody stole my food. Then he gave me a new order and it was very good." - Tenzin Nyidon

"The washroom is too small, smells bad and it dirty. Atmosphere is good. Pretty room colours. Good outfit. I like the music." - Tenzin Paldon

"Very good chicken curry  with rice. Okay service." - Tenzin Chokden

"Service was pretty fast for a big group. There was a hair in my food." - Anh

"It was very good and spicy." - Tenzin Choesang

"The door of the washroom was difficult to open and the washroom was so small. The floor was so sticky and it stinks. The food was delicious, but I was full so I am going to take it home. The lassi was wonderful. The service was not so good as they forgot so many people's orders and brought it late. The atmosphere was wonderful with beautiful wall pieces and great music. And the statue of Ganesh looks wonderful in the corner." - Femisha

"The decorations are good. The washroom smells, but its clean though. The glasses and plates remind me of Nepal." - Sonam

"The washroom was very clean. I like the decorations because it reminds me of India and the food was tasty." - Tenzin Chodon

"Pros: I love the decorations. I like the dishes which remind me of India. I loved the food, it was really delicious and yummy in my tummy. I liked the tables and chairs because they were really clean. The waiters were really welcoming. Cons: I didn't like the washroom because it was really small and I also think there should be more sinks and mirrors." - Chime

"I like the food and the decoration around the restaurant. It reminds me of India. The washroom was small and we have to squish ourselves in." - Tenzin Dasel

Addis Ababa Reviews

"It's hot in here. Lights are low but it has a good feeling to it. There's a little cliff and once you trip over the edge you fall down the stairs. The food was good and yeah, some foods were spicy." - Vivian

"Food: it was average. Didn't like the spiciness of the food. Chicken was the best part of the meal. Not enjoying eating with my hands. Dessert was yummy." - Isabel

"I got my water right when I came in. The washrooms were kind of small and in the basement, which is not that good. It is clean. The food is great, especially the chicken. It was wonderfully delicious. I really like the mango juice and the waitress treated me kindly. I also like the big patio. There wasn't a menu to pick a variety of food." - Chosang

"Very cultural. 9/10. Bathrooms: really, really, really bad. need to change. 3/10. Desserts good. 7/10." - Ahash

"When I entered the restaurant, the first thing I had was a drink (mango juice) and the service took too long to get the food and drink. First of all, the mango juice was not even cold, it was really warm and I finished it in 3 seconds. Second, I hate the way they put the tables together because there are lots of customers and its really hard to move and I had to squeeze in which I really hated. I didn't like the way they decorated the restaurant and I didn't like their cups, which were too small and I was really thirsty. Later on, this awful smell came floating through the air and I always had to blow my nose to get the smell out." - Tenzin Woesal

"The decorations were great with beautiful lamps and amazing wall pieces. The washrooms were kind of small and I didn't like the sink. It was small and dirty. We eat together with our hands in a big plate. It was different for others but not for me as I eat with my hands at home. Overall I think this restaurant is unique and the decorations were superb. The best." - Femisha

Oddfellows Reviews

"Bathroom = 8/10. Small, but feels good, isn't dirty. Although small, feels nice and comfy. Sorta loud. Deer Burger: I feel really disturbed and disgusted. Wonder how it'll end up like... Burger good and all but the sauce and ingredients on top are too overwhelming and strong. Doesn't quite fit in well." - Ann

"Talihun threw up some food in a toilet because it tasted like his hair." - Monlan

"Restrooms were very bad, but good privacy. Not very big, only one toilet. Needs a better flush. Food really good. Desserts really good." - Ahash

"Washroom was so small. 88%. Service was fast. 91 %. It was comfy and I had a lot of fun with my friends." - Tenzin Wangchor

"Good: welcomed by very nice people. Bad: washroom too small. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to kids and families because the salt and pepper shakers are shaped like male anatomy." - Tenzin Chokden

"The toilet was yellow and it was dirty. It took too long to get the food. The salad tasted bad. The ice cream was good. I liked the washroom though." - Rahele

"The decorations were good. There was a dead beaver! It was neatly organized." - Sonam

"The fries were really good." - Pema

"The service was very good. They brought the food really fast for me. Some of the food is good, but the deer burger was not good. I like the fries." - Tilahun

Oddfellows

Veggie-Eaters at Oddfellows

Mark, Femisha and I were the vegetarians at dinner on Saturday. Chef Matty was great and came out to tell us what options we had to eat. He described tempeh to Femisha as a 'fermented soy bean square patty' which didn't sound very good, but we convinced Femisha that it was delicious and I think she liked it.

We asked Femisha whether she was a vegetarian for religious or cultural purposes and she said that she wasn't, that her parents weren't vegetarians (they just don't eat beef as Hindus) and that she just became a vegetarian a year ago because she doesn't like eating meat. Mark and I thought this was the coolest, as we had only stopped eating meat when we grew up and left our parents' meat-eating homes. She's clearly vegetarian-saavy years beyond her time.

Here's Femisha on Oddfellows:

"The place looks so small, but we are here with a great company of people and some strange things are here. They have a dead beaver in the restaurant. The drink (mango-peach juice) is okay, but I liked the mac and cheese better. I had a tempeh sandwich and it was so huge. The fries were great and dessert was my most favourite part of the meal. It was homemade chocolate ice cream, bananas and strawberries. Overall the food was great, the company was great and the staff forgot my order, but it was just a misunderstanding, and they were great with all the others."
